Setting up the room

• Clear a path wide enough for a wheelchair or walker between the bed and the bathroom.
• Remove loose rugs and cables from the floor.
• Place a night light between the bed and the bathroom.
• Keep the hand control, a phone, water and glasses within reach of the bed.
• If a carer will help with transfers, leave space on the side they will use.

Safety and care

Keep the bed at its lowest height when the user is resting, and raise it only for care or transfers; this reduces the risk of falls. Side rails help some users and are not suitable for others — ask the doctor or nurse. Change position regularly if the user spends long hours in bed; a care professional can advise how often.
