Galata, Karaköy and Istiklal Avenue with a Wheelchair

Beyoğlu is steep, but there is a level way to enjoy it: the Karaköy waterfront, the funicular up the hill and the pedestrian Istiklal Avenue on top.

Galata, Karaköy and Istiklal Avenue with a Wheelchair

Istiklal Avenue, Galata and Karaköy are among Istanbul's liveliest areas — and among its steepest. The streets that climb from the Karaköy waterfront to Galata Tower are some of the hardest in the city for a wheelchair. The good news: you do not have to climb them. With the funicular and a taxi or two, Istiklal Avenue and the waterfront are both easy to enjoy.

The level way up to Istiklal Avenue

The modern funicular between Kabataş and Taksim runs underground, so you go up the hill without the slopes. At the top, Taksim Square opens onto Istiklal Avenue. Lifts connect the platforms with the street; check lift availability on the Metro Istanbul website before you travel, as maintenance can close them.

Istiklal Avenue on wheels

Istiklal Avenue is pedestrian and paved, with a gentle slope from Taksim towards Tünel. It is very busy in the evenings and at weekends; mornings are calmer. Many shops, cafés and cultural centres along Istiklal Avenue have level entrances; historic buildings and churches may have a step. The red nostalgic tram runs along the middle — keep to the sides when you hear its bell.

Galata Tower

The streets immediately around Galata Tower are steep and cobbled. Visiting the tower square is easier by taxi than by climbing from Karaköy. For accessibility inside the tower, check the official museum information before your visit. The cafés on the square are a good place to watch the tower even if you do not go up.

Karaköy and Galataport: the easy half

Down by the water, everything changes. Galataport has a long, level promenade with cafés, museums and views of the old city. Karaköy's waterfront, the ferry piers and the T1 tram stop are all on level ground, which makes them a natural start or end to a day on Istiklal Avenue.

A relaxed day plan

  1. Morning: the Karaköy and Galataport waterfront, with breakfast by the water.
  2. Late morning: a short Bosphorus cruise from Karaköy or Kabataş.
  3. Lunch at Karaköy.
  4. Afternoon: the tram to Kabataş, the funicular to Taksim and a slow walk along Istiklal Avenue towards Tünel.
  5. Evening: a taxi back to your hotel.

Where to stay

Hotels on the waterfront in Karaköy or near Taksim avoid the steep middle of the hill. Hotels in the lanes around Galata are charming but often on slopes and with steps — ask for photos of the entrance before booking.

Which wheelchair suits Istiklal Avenue

If you plan to explore Istiklal Avenue and the waterfront independently, an electric wheelchair makes the long distances easy. For short distances with a companion, a lightweight folding wheelchair is simplest for taxis and the funicular. Not sure? Try our wheelchair finder or read electric or manual?

Museums and culture on the level

Beyoğlu has some of Istanbul's best modern museums, and the newer ones are designed for step-free access. On the Galataport waterfront, the modern art museum and the cafés around it are on level ground. Along Istiklal Avenue, several cultural centres, bookshops and galleries have lifts. Older buildings and churches are more variable: a step at the entrance is common, and staff can often help with a portable ramp if you ask.

Eating and drinking

Karaköy's waterfront and the streets just behind it are full of cafés and restaurants with outdoor tables, which are usually the easiest seats for a wheelchair. On Istiklal Avenue, choose places at street level; many popular restaurants are on upper floors without a lift. Rooftop bars with views of Galata Tower are tempting, but check the lift before you go.

Questions we are often asked

Can I go from Karaköy to Istiklal Avenue without the funicular? The historic Tünel funicular links Karaköy with the lower end of Istiklal, but access to its stations is not straightforward for wheelchairs. A taxi to Tünel or to Taksim is the simplest alternative.

Is Istiklal Avenue too crowded for a wheelchair? In the evenings and at weekends it is very busy. Go in the morning or early afternoon on a weekday and keep to one side of the street.

Is the nostalgic tram accessible? The historic red tram has steps and is not suitable for wheelchairs. It is a lovely sight, though — enjoy it from the street.

Can I see the Bosphorus from Beyoğlu? Yes: the Galataport promenade and the Karaköy piers have open views of the Bosphorus and the old city.

Safety tips

  • Use pedestrian crossings with dropped kerbs; on side streets, kerbs can be high.
  • Watch for delivery scooters on Istiklal Avenue, even though it is pedestrian.
  • Keep your phone and wallet zipped away in crowds.

Why Beyoğlu is worth the effort

Beyoğlu is where Istanbul's nineteenth-century city meets its modern life. Along Istiklal Avenue stand old passages, consulates, churches and cinemas, and the side streets are full of cafés and music. Galata Tower, rebuilt many times since the medieval Genoese colony, has watched over the Golden Horn for centuries. Karaköy, once the city's banking and port district, is now one of its liveliest places to eat.

For a wheelchair user, the trick is to treat the hill as a lift ride rather than a walk: go up by funicular or taxi, enjoy the level top of Istiklal Avenue, and come down the same way. That way you see the best of Beyoğlu without the slopes that make it famous.

Getting back to your hotel

Taxis are plentiful around Taksim Square and at the bottom of Istiklal Avenue near Tünel. In the evening, demand is high, so ask a café or your hotel to call one, and have the hotel address written in Turkish. If your folding wheelchair or electric wheelchair needs the boot, tell the driver before you get in.

We deliver to hotels in Beyoğlu, Karaköy and across Istanbul, and collect the equipment at the end of your stay.
