Electric or Manual Wheelchair for Istanbul? 7 Questions to Decide
Should you rent an electric or manual wheelchair for Istanbul? Seven simple questions about the user, the city and your plans help you choose the right chair.
Choosing between an electric or manual wheelchair is the most common question we hear from customers planning a trip to Istanbul. Both work well here, but for different people and different plans. Istanbul’s hills, cobblestones, taxis, trams and ferries all play a part in the decision. Answer the seven questions below and you will know which chair suits you best.
1. Who will move the wheelchair?
This is the most important question. A manual wheelchair is pushed by the user with the hand rims or by a companion with the push handles. On Istanbul’s slopes, pushing a manual chair takes real effort, so a fit companion makes a big difference. If the user travels alone, has limited arm strength, or the companion cannot push uphill, an electric wheelchair is usually the better choice: the user drives it with a joystick at walking pace.
2. Where will you spend your days?
If your plans focus on level areas — the Sultanahmet square, the Galataport and Karaköy waterfront, the Bosphorus shore and the Kadıköy seafront — a manual wheelchair is comfortable and simple. If you want to explore hilly neighbourhoods such as Galata, Cihangir, Balat or the streets around the Grand Bazaar, an electric wheelchair saves a lot of energy. Even so, the steepest streets are best reached by taxi in either chair.
3. How often will you use taxis?
A manual wheelchair folds in seconds and weighs about 12–18 kg, so it fits in any taxi boot and anyone can lift it. Folding lithium electric wheelchairs weigh about 26–30 kg and still fit in a standard taxi boot, but lifting is easier with two people. Full-size electric wheelchairs with gel batteries weigh around 45 kg and need a larger vehicle. If you plan several taxi rides every day, a manual chair or a light folding electric chair is the practical choice.
4. How far will you go each day?
Most of our folding lithium electric wheelchairs cover about 15–25 km per charge, depending on the user’s weight, slopes and speed. That is more than a full day of sightseeing needs, and you charge the battery overnight from a normal socket. Distance is not a limit for a manual chair, but the companion’s energy is: long days of pushing on hills are tiring. Our customers who plan long days usually choose electric.
5. Does your hotel suit the chair?
Check the hotel lift and the entrance before you choose. Electric wheelchairs are a little longer and heavier than manual chairs; most fit into standard lifts, but very small lifts in old boutique hotels can be a problem. If the entrance has steps, a manual chair is easier to lift. Ask the hotel for the lift door width and depth, and tell us when you book.
6. Will you use trams, metro and ferries?
Both chairs can be used on Istanbul’s step-free tram, metro, Marmaray and city ferries. A manual or transit wheelchair is narrower and easier in crowded vehicles; an electric wheelchair gives the user independence between stations. Read our guide to Istanbul public transport in a wheelchair for the details, and check station lifts on the Metro Istanbul website.
7. How comfortable is the user driving?
Driving an electric wheelchair is easy for most people: push the joystick to move, release it to stop. Our team gives a short lesson at delivery, and most users feel confident within minutes. However, it does require good concentration in crowded streets. If the user has difficulty with coordination, vision or reaction time, a manual chair pushed by a companion is safer.

Frequently asked questions
Is an electric or manual wheelchair better for Istanbul’s hills?
An electric wheelchair handles moderate slopes easily. With a manual chair, a companion has to push uphill. For the steepest streets, take a taxi whichever chair you choose.
Can an electric wheelchair go in an Istanbul taxi?
Folding lithium electric wheelchairs weigh about 26–30 kg and fit in a standard taxi boot; lifting them is easier with two people. Heavier full-size models need a larger vehicle.
Is it hard to learn to drive an electric wheelchair?
No. You steer with a joystick and the chair stops when you let go. Our team gives a short lesson at delivery, and most users are comfortable within a few minutes.
